The Northern California Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO NorCal) is a national, multi-ethnic professional organization founded in 1971 to advance the representation of minority professionals in the transportation industry, nurture their career growth through networking and training, and champion equitable transportation development. A cornerstone of COMTO’s work is supporting the next generation of transportation professionals by providing financial support for students in need.
COMTO NORCAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND HISTORY
Since 2003, the Northern California Chapter of COMTO has awarded well over $275,000 in scholarships to almost 200 deserving students.
COMTO National was founded in 1971 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC to provide a forum for minority professionals in the transportation industry. COMTO now has more than 3,000 members in 35 chapters across the United States and Canada. Our members encompass individuals, organizations, transportation agencies, non-profits, and Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs). Members of COMTO now serve in every sector of the transportation industry.
COMTO has evolved into a premier organization for the training, education, and professional development of minority transportation professionals. The mission of COMTO is to ensure a level playing field and maximum participation in the transportation industry for individuals, businesses, and communities of color through internships, advocacy, information sharing, training, education, mentoring, and professional development. COMTO has assisted many minorities with their careers, and those seeking careers in the transportation industry.

Mydria ClarkInternships
During the summers of 2005, 2010 and 2013, this chapter was selected to participate in the COMTO national internship initiative, COMTO’s Inside Track for Youth (CITY) Internship Program, supported by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). College students were paid during the 10-week program and interned with regional transit agencies such as BART, AC Transit and San Francisco MTA.
Interns were given challenging and meaningful work experiences and were mentored by agency professionals. In addition to their daily assignments, the interns received valuable opportunities to interact with transportation officials during their orientation, COMTO meetings and during a recognition program.
COMTO’s Careers in Transportation for Youth (CITY) Internship Program provides minority undergraduate and graduate students with a unique paid opportunity to gain professional and practical experience in the transportation industry. Through the CITY Program, COMTO seeks to prepare the best and brightest to become leaders, decision-makers, and change agents in the transportation industry. Interns will work, learn, and gain professional development and team-leading experience at transportation agencies or businesses, while exploring careers within the industry.
