COMTO’s college scholarship program began in 2004 and has evolved from providing three scholarships of $500 each in 2004 to $1,000 - $3,000 per student. Over the past thirteen years COMTO has awarded over $200,000 to minority students. Student’s applicants do not necessarily have to have transportation-oriented courses of study, but the scholarship essay portion of the application process required that they demonstrate a link between their career plans and the transportation industry. Scholarships are usually awarded at COMTO’s Annual December Holiday Dinner.
During the summers of 2005, 2010 and 2013, this chapter was selected to participate in the COMTO national internship initiative, COMTO’s Inside Track for Youth (CITY) Internship Program, supported by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). College students were paid during the 10-week program and interned with regional transit agencies such as BART, AC Transit and San Francisco MTA.
Interns were given challenging and meaningful work experiences and were mentored by agency professionals. In addition to their daily assignments, the interns received valuable opportunities to interact with transportation officials during their orientation, COMTO meetings and during a recognition program.
